Labuan Kebo Waterfall Munduk – A Hidden Waterfall Experience in North Bali

Last month, I finally visited Labuan Kebo Waterfall in Munduk, and the experience felt completely different from the busy tourist attractions in South Bali. The journey itself already became part of the adventure because the drive from the southern area of Bali to Munduk took around 2.5 hours. However, the mountain scenery, cool air, rice terraces, and quiet villages along the road made the trip enjoyable from the beginning.

As we arrived in Munduk, the atmosphere immediately changed. The air felt fresher, the surroundings looked greener, and the peaceful environment created the perfect setting for a nature escape in North Bali. From the main road, we continued for a few more minutes until reaching the parking area where our waterfall trekking adventure started.

After paying the entrance ticket, we began walking down hundreds of stone steps surrounded by tropical trees and forest views. The trail to Labuan Kebo Waterfall combines proper stairs with natural jungle paths, so the walk feels more authentic and adventurous compared to many popular Bali waterfalls. Along the way, the sound of flowing water slowly became louder, while the fresh forest atmosphere made every step enjoyable.

The trek includes around 170 steps before the route continues through a more natural riverside path. Although the trail becomes slightly challenging near the river, the scenery makes the experience worthwhile. We crossed small rocky sections, walked beside the stream, and enjoyed the untouched beauty of Munduk’s tropical landscape.

Finally, the waterfall appeared between the cliffs and forest. Labuan Kebo Waterfall stands tall with powerful water flowing directly into the river below. The surrounding cliffs, green vegetation, and peaceful atmosphere create a hidden paradise feeling that many travelers search for when exploring North Bali waterfalls.

One of the most beautiful spots near the waterfall is the small bridge facing the falls. From there, I could fully enjoy the waterfall view while taking photos with the dramatic jungle background. Unlike some crowded waterfalls in Bali, Labuan Kebo still feels quiet and natural, which makes the experience even more special for travelers who enjoy authentic Bali nature tours.

Labuan Kebo Waterfall also carries an interesting local story behind its unique name. Local people believe the area once became a resting place for buffaloes crossing the river, which later inspired the name “Labuan Kebo.” Stories like this make the experience more meaningful because visitors not only explore nature but also connect with local culture and history in Munduk.

“Once upon a time, there lived a shepherd from the village of Munduk. This shepherd always bathed his buffaloes in a waterfall area. In the morning, while the shepherd lef his buffaloes bathe, he would climb up the waterfall cliff to cut grass. Unbeknownst to him, the shepherd fell off the cliff while cutting grass. By late afternoon, the buffaloes returned home without the shepherd. His family, puzzled and worried, started searching for him. Eventually, the shepherd was found lifeless of the bottom of the waterfall. Therefore, this waterfall was named “Labuhan Kebo”. “Labuhan Kebo” comes from two words: “labuh” which in Balinese means “fall” and “kebo” which means “buffalo.” The term “Labuhan Kebo” has since been preserved by the people of Gobleg Village as the name of the waterfall that sustains the nature and community of Gableg Village”.

After spending time near the waterfall, we climbed back to the parking area before continuing the adventure to Melanting Waterfall. Since both waterfalls sit close to each other, many travelers combine them in one trekking route while exploring Munduk’s hidden waterfalls.

For travelers looking for hidden waterfalls in Bali, peaceful jungle trekking, and authentic nature experiences away from tourist crowds, Labuan Kebo Waterfall in Munduk deserves a place on the itinerary. The combination of scenic hiking trails, cool mountain air, tropical forest views, and natural beauty creates one of the most rewarding waterfall experiences in North Bali.
