Backroads Trekking & Rural Hiking in Bali – Explore Hidden Trails Beyond the Tourist Routes

Bali offers much more than crowded attractions and popular sightseeing spots. At Bali Hidden Trails, we specialize in backroads trekking and rural hiking experiences that take you far away from the usual tourist areas and into the heart of authentic Bali. Our carefully designed routes follow hidden village paths, ancient farming tracks, jungle trails, river crossings, mountain routes, and traditional footpaths that local communities have used for generations.

Most visitors never discover these places. While many travelers follow the same popular routes, our guests explore remote landscapes, meet local farmers, experience daily village life, and walk through some of the most beautiful natural environments in Bali.

Local Knowledge

Our experienced guides grew up in Bali and possess extensive knowledge of local culture, history, nature, and hidden locations throughout the island.

One of the highlights of our rural hiking experiences includes exploring Bali’s famous UNESCO-listed cultural landscapes. These beautiful rice terraces showcase the traditional Subak irrigation system that Balinese farmers have preserved for centuries.

Walking through these landscapes provides a deeper understanding of how local communities maintain harmony between nature, agriculture, and spiritual beliefs.

Unlike crowded viewpoints, our hidden routes allow you to experience these rice terraces from unique perspectives while walking directly through the countryside.

Hidden Waterfalls and Jungle Adventures

Bali contains many hidden waterfalls beyond the famous tourist destinations. Our trekking routes often lead to secluded waterfalls where you can relax, swim, and enjoy the surrounding rainforest.

The journey itself forms part of the adventure. You may follow jungle trails, cross streams, navigate bamboo bridges, and discover untouched corners of Bali that few travelers ever see.

These natural environments offer excellent opportunities for photography, wildlife observation, and peaceful connection with nature.

Mountain Hiking Experiences

For travelers seeking greater adventure, Bali Hidden Trails also offers mountain hiking experiences across some of Bali’s most beautiful peaks.

Popular mountain trekking destinations include:

  • Mount Batukaru
  • Mount Abang

Are hidden waterfalls included?

Many of our routes in Bali  include hidden waterfalls, river crossings, and opportunities for swimming in natural pools.

Will we meet local people?

Yes. Meeting local farmers and villagers forms an important part of many of our trekking experiences. These encounters happen naturally as we walk through rural communities.

Can families join the trekking tours?

Yes. Many of our rural hiking routes suit families with children. We can customize the route according to the group’s abilities.

What should I bring?

Comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing, a hat, sunscreen, drinking water, swimwear for waterfall visits, and a camera.

Do I need trekking experience?

No. We offer routes suitable for beginners, intermediate hikers, and experienced trekkers. We recommend the best route based on your fitness level and preferences.

Are your trekking routes crowded?

No. We specialize in hidden trails, backroads, and rural paths where you rarely encounter other tourists. Many of our routes pass through local villages and natural areas that remain largely undiscovered.

Do your tours include international airfare?

Travelers arrive from all over the world to begin our tours and it is not possible to include international airfare in our prices. We would be happy to help you arrange flights. Just ask for an air quote when making your booking.

What vaccinations are recommended for this adventure?

It’s important that you receive the most accurate and up-to-date travel health information for the region you will be visiting. The only one qualified to provide you with this advice is your family physician or a specialist from a Travel Health clinic.

Can you help arrange my travel visas?

Requirements for travel visas vary widely depending on your nationality and your destination. Although we are unable to arrange visas on your behalf. If you do require a visa you can arrange them yourself or use the services of a travel agent or visa processing company.

What clothing should I pack for one of your adventures?

We always recommend packing as light as possible however the specific requirements for your tour will vary widely depending on where and when you are traveling. Our ‘Trip Details’ document includes a suggested packing list and these can be downloaded from each individual trip summary page. The checklist is tour specific and based upon the experience of our ground staff.

What is the most appropriate type of luggage to bring?

We strongly recommend bringing a backpack or duffel bag, as suitcases can be cumbersome and difficult to store in buses, under seats, etc.. Keep in mind that you will normally have to carry your own luggage on and off buses and trains and up and down hotel staircases. Suitcases with wheels may not work well on dirt or cobblestone roads.

What type of ground transportation is used on your tours?

Trip specific information on transportation can be found on the trip summary page however in most cases we use public transportation. We’ve found that how you get there significantly influences the tone of your journey and public transportation allows face-to-face interaction with the local people. Some of our adventures, including our “Superior”, “Comfort Class” and most adventures in Africa, use private transportation.

Can I book extra nights of hotel accommodation before or after my tour?

Yes, in most cases we can arrange additional accommodation at our starting or ending hotels in Bali. If we are unable to provide you with the extra nights we will give you the name of a hotel you can contact directly. Please also note that extra accommodations must be booked inside of 30 days of the visa validity for Indonesia.
